Glutinous rice and other fillings wrapped and steamed or boiled in bamboo leaves (don't eat the leaves), traditionally eaten during the Dragon Boat Festival.
In the United States, they are often listed by their Mandarin pronunciation zongzi, and sometimes called Chinese tamales.
Legend
After the patriotic poet-politician Qu Yuan drowned himself in a river, villagers threw zongzi into the water to distract fish from nibbling at the body, a practice now commemorated with the Dragon Boat Festival.
