豆腐

豆 is bean (in this case, soybean), and 腐 is rotten (not really, but like cheese).

Tofu is generally known as bean curd (coagulated soybean milk), but in Chinese cuisine also refers to a variety of tofu-like dishes and desserts with a gelatin consistency.

Pronunciation

The name tofu is based on the pronunciation of the Japanese word, which is derived from the Mandarin pronunciation (starts with a d sound), which is just a bit different from the Cantonese pronuncation (starts with a dow sound instead of doh).
