Chinese beef jerky is marinaded with soy sauce and sugar, sometimes honey and other sauces, and not always made with beef (the original version from Fujian is often made with pork or mutton). The result is tender and flavorful (sometimes fruit-flavored!).
Personal Note
This was one of the snacks I used to have as a kid from our Chinatown shopping runs (infrequent, when you live in Iowa), and when I finally tried American beef jerky, I thought, you've got to be kidding.
